Ardiles Rante wins gold in France’s Px3 photography award for News Corp Australia job

Indonesian photographer Ardiles Rante has won gold in the 2014 general news category of France’s prestigious Px3 photography award for work he did on assignment with News Corp Australia.
Mr Rante’s photo shows two Sri Lankan women in deep distress after survivors and bodies were pulled from the sea off the south coast of Java, in July last year, after their overloaded asylum boat sank.

Mr Rante was on assignment with News Corp Australia journalist Paul Toohey and were on the scene in the immediate aftermath of the sinking.
“It’s good to get this achievement because this was hard work,” Mr Rante said.
“I never believe in luck — I always believe in chasing things.
“There is always a question, if we look at people suffering, do we help them or photograph them? As a photojournalist we have to do our job. We have to share it with the world.”

The Px3, or “Prix de la Photographie, Paris”, has been described as Europe’s biggest and most prestigious photography competition.
