The dengue virus, of which there are four known strains, is transmitted by the aedes aegypti mosquito and thrives in humans, especially the urban variety living in tropical zones such as Southeast Asia, South Asia and Central America. Indonesia, where all four strains have been found, has coped well with this rainy seasonës dengue outbreak in terms of providing treatment for dengue patients, as is borne out by the data. Out of 53,744 reported cases of dengue between January 1 to April 12, only 632 people died, a case/fatality rate of some 1.2 per cent.
